The Department of Natural Resources has posted signs on the Big Island warning swimmers after two people were attacked by sharks in the last week. The couple had been snorkeling when he saw a shark swim by but could not see his wife. The shark swam by several times before the man returned to shore and reporting his wife missing, the department said. On 19 February 2020, eleven people—including the perpetrator—were killed in a spree shooting at two shisha bars and a flat in the town. The perpetrator, known as Tobias Rathjen, opened fire at Midnight Bar and Arena Bar in Hanau centre and Kesselstadt. Tobias then drove home, where he killed his mother, and shot himself.

The swimmer was taken to an island hospital and was reported to be in stable condition, the AP reported. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
